Kelut ( kind of yam) is very helpful in time of famine.
Cult. A large native yam which grows wild. The tubers contain a poisonous alkaloid, dioscorine, which must be washed out before they can be eaten. The tubers are sliced and placed in running water for several days. It is locally an important famine food and is preferred to other tuberous plants. The stalk is called (WBM) tuveg. An old, shrivelled inedible tuber is called (WBM) ku-es.
