Cult. An erect smooth plant which grows from tuberous roots. The stalk and leaves resemble ginger, Zingiber officinale. The flower-bearing stems spring directly from the roots and bear a greenish red cone. The root is slightly aromatic and the juice from the root is used locally as a medicine for wounds and for flavoring stews.
